Temperature monitoring is not only vital to ensuring your own standards, it now is governed by international organisations. Virtually all operators of vehicles carrying chilled or frozen foods will require a temperature monitoring system to be fitted to any new vehicle they purchase.

The most effective method of monitoring the air temperature is to install two sensors within the Reefer. One must be positioned below the cooling unit to measure return air temperature, and the other in the ceiling of the chamber approximately three quarters of the way down the length of the chamber in order to optimise the accuracy of the reading.

These sensors are then connected to a recording instrument, such as a TranscanĀ® which is fitted to the trailer or within the vehicle cab. If the cooling unit does not use forced air, the air temperature should be measured above and below the load. This is because the vertical temperature gradients may skew the figures obtained.

This same process is also applicable in vehicles that are designed to carry goods at different temperatures in different compartments. Air temperature measurements are made within each compartment so that the performance of each area can be confidently assessed. This close analysis of the system will ensure that any required maintenance can be indentified and carried out before it becomes a major issue.
